4-H Youth Development

Northern/Central Area 4-H Camp — July 16-22, 2018

Camper Registration Open: May 10, 2018

It is time to plan for the 2018 Northern/Central Area 4-H Camp at Lake Tahoe! The 4-H Camp offers youth an opportunity to have fun in the great outdoors! Past activities have included canoeing, shooting sports, military day, dances, skits, workshops and arts & crafts activities. Camp is planned and operated by UNCE staff, UNCE volunteers and teen counselors.

The counties considered "in-area" for the Northern/Central Area 4-H Camp includes Churchill, Lander, Lyon and Pershing. Youth from military families residing in these counties or whose parent/guardian is based in these counties is considered "in-area".

Camp is open to all youth between the ages of 9 and 13 (as of January 1, 2018.) Youth do not have to be enrolled in 4-H to apply for camp, but must enroll as part of camp registration. Check with your local county 4-H office for annual 4-H enrollment fees.

Youth Camper Registration:

Northern/Central Area campers must turn in ALL registration documents, with full registration payment, to their local Cooperative Extension office by June 1, 2018. Registrations are accepted on a first come, first served basis; space at camp is limited!

The 2018 fee for each camper is $285.00. The camper fee includes meals, snacks, lodging, camp photo, camp t-shirt and activities. Contact your local county 4-H office for a camper registration package. Scholarships may be available through your local county 4-H office.

Northern/Central Area youth are strongly encouraged to register early. Northern/Central Area youth have the first opportunity to register for and attend camp. However, after June 18th out-of-area campers may be invited to camp based on available space and the number of adult chaperones.

Adult Volunteer Chaperone Registration:

Adults who are not already official UNCE volunteers must successfully complete the volunteer application process and pass a fingerprint background screening. The screening can take up to 3 months to complete. Adult chaperones will be required to attend a camp training in June (date & location to be determined.) There is no fee for adult volunteers to attend camp as chaperones. Please contact your local 4-H office for more details.

Teen Counselor Application/Registration:

ALL application documents for teen counselors are due in the local Cooperative Extension office by April 9, 2018. Teens applying to be counselors must be between the ages of 14 and 18, as of January 1, 2018. The 2018 fee for teen counselors is $190.00, payable upon acceptance to camp. Teen applicants must be able to attend a camp training on (date and time to be determined).

Not all applicants interviewed will be selected as counselors. The Interview/Selection Committee will rank all applicants after interviews. Counselors will be invited to attend camp based on these rankings and the number of cabins open is dependent on availability of adult chaperones. Those not invited to camp will be placed on an alternate list; only enough counselors necessary to staff open cabins will be invited to camp.

2018 Central Area 4-H Camp — Camp Training

There is a mandatory training for teen counselors and adult chaperones in June, (date & location to be determined). Training is an opportunity for camp staff (counselors, chaperones, UNCE employees and the camp director) to get acquainted, to develop skills and activities benefiting campers, and to discuss mandatory training, rules, and responsibilities. Failure of a teen counselor to attend this training may result in his/her replacement by an alternate.
