Raising Your Relative's Kids: Taking Care of You

Important to you, your child and your whole family is that you take care of you too! You do want to be the best parent you can be, right? Healthy eating, exercise and adequate sleep are important. So is learning about resources to be an informed parent (start by checking out this website and some of the links) and speaking to others in a situation like yours (see support groups , below). You will also benefit by taking a break. This can be as simple as time alone to read a book or time spent on an outing with friends. Ask your family for help and continue to participate in activities that you enjoy for your health and well-being. Research shows that when the relatives taking care of foster children have a sounding board and take care of their needs, the children do better as well.

Experts agree you should:

  • Put your own physical and emotional health at the top of your list.
  • Not be embarrassed to ask for help.
  • Seek out services that are available in our community: financial, legal, educational and free- or low-cost counseling.
  • Find local support through your friends, family, church or a support group.
  • Laugh and enjoy the journey, knowing you may be saving a child's life.
