University of Nevada Cooperative Extension offers brand new curriculum with mini-grant opportunity

If your interests include learning about critical issues in the food system, the brand new FoodSpan curriculum beginning in January should stimulate debate about crucial food system topics related to human health, the environment, equality and animal welfare.

The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future developed FoodSpan as a natural outgrowth of the work it does to help build a healthier, more equitable and more resilient food system. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Faculty Instructor and Registered Dietitian, Aurora Buffington, will begin offering the FoodSpan curriculum on Jan. 21, 2017.

The curriculum is administered in a series of 7 three-hour workshops covering three units over a period of three months beginning with meeting the food system. Participants will explore our food system and discuss the industrialization of agriculture. Unit two covers farmers, factories and food chains; and unit three relates to consumers and communities.

Adults with an interest in food systems should consider attending these free sessions held at Cooperative Extension’s Lifelong Learning Center located at 8050 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, Nev. from 9 a.m. to noon. Space is limited. Register early at and search for Foodspan. Future session dates are Feb. 11 and 25, March 4, 18 and 25.

At the end of the three units, participants will be eligible to apply for a Food Citizen Action Project grant up to $599. Participants will identify a food system problem and design an intervention to address it. This culminating project has attendees apply what they have learned from prior lessons, and empowers them to create change via the project. At least five of the seven sessions must be attended to be eligible to apply for the grant, with up to $10,000 in grant funding available.
