University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners host tours and events

Cooperative Extension’s Herb Garden

The Master Gardeners are back in the gardens as the fall planting season begins! Newcomers and longtime residents are invited to learn about desert gardening during these September events:

Free guided tours of the gardens are offered each Friday at 10 a.m. at Cooperative Extension’s Demonstration and Test Gardens. The 3-acre garden offers specialty plantings of roses, milkweeds, herbs, vegetables, fruit orchard, natural wash and cacti. Meet in the Lobby at the Lifelong Learning Center located at 8050 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, Nev.

Hands-on demonstrations of seasonal rose care will be offered in the Rose Garden on Sept. 12 and 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. Meet in the Rose Garden located at the Lifelong Learning Center.

Acacia Park in Henderson hosts free classes from 9-11a.m. on Saturdays. Register on-line via the City of Henderson. Acacia Park is located at 50 Casa Del Fuego, Henderson, Nev.

Sept. 10 - Getting Started as a Desert Gardener — Master Gardener Jeanne Toscano examines the basics of irrigation, watering, soil preparation of the caliche, soil and salts.

Sept. 17 - Growing Cool Season Vegetables in Las Vegas — Master Gardener Don Fabbi discusses how and when to grow garlic, asparagus, broccoli, and root vegetables during the cool fall and winter months.

Sept. 24 - Native and Desert-Adapted Plants — Libby Powell talks about using native plants in your landscape. Not only are they are more likely to survive in your landscape, they can be beautiful and keep costs down.

The West Charleston Library will host Master Gardener Fabbi on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. Fabbi will discuss which vegetables and herbs you can grow to grace your holiday dinners. The Library is located at 6301 W. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, Nev.

Inspirada Community Center will host Master Gardener Mary Duensing on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6:15 p.m. Email to reserve a space. Fall is the time to renew your landscape and plant a tree. Duensing will review tree selection, planting and care. The Center is located at 2000 Via Firenze, Henderson, Nev.
