University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will host a Sibshop Facilitator Training and Siblings Issues Workshop Friday and Saturday April 1 and April 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will be conducted by Don Meyer, the nation’s leading trainer and educator on sibling support. Sibshops are lively programs for young brothers and sisters of kids with special healthy developmental and mental health concerns. Facilitators in training will learn about siblings’ lifelong concerns, how to organize a local Sibshop, and experience what a Sibshop is all about.

“With the exception of mothers, siblings spend more time with children who have developmental disabilities or chronic impairments than any other family member,” stated Diana Rovetti, project director for the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities. “Because the sibling relationship is the longest-lasting relationship in the family, brothers and sisters are likely to experience concerns throughout their lives.”

Cooperative Extension’s event is open to professionals including psychologists, social workers, service providers, teachers, adult siblings, parents and other family members. Those interested in siblings issues, but not necessarily interested in how to run a Sibshop may choose to attend Friday only, however facilitator trainees must attend both days to become a certified Sibshop Facilitator. Attending the two-day workshop will supply you with all of the materials and the know-how you need to start, plan, and conduct the activities to hold your own Sibshop.

“Despite their importance, siblings’ concerns are too often ignored,” said Rovetti. “For everyone’s sake, parents and providers must learn more about life as a brother or sister of a person with special needs.”

The event, will be held at Cooperative Extension’s Lifelong Learning Center located at 8050 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, Nev.
