Doolittle Community Garden receives award of excellence
2015 Southern Nevada Landscape Award winner
The award of excellence is the highest honor earned in the Southern Nevada Landscape Awards. Winners of the award demonstrate superior design skill and a mastery of landscape and gardening practices. The City of Las Vegas Doolittle Senior Center Community Garden received this prestigious honor in September.
For 10 years, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Don Fabbi has been coordinating and educating the gardeners, volunteers and neighboring residents at the Community Garden. Fabbi’s dedication to the garden was instrumental in the award of excellence designation.
Doolittle Senior Center Community Gardens were described by judges as “big and beautiful” and “clearly a labor of love.” The Garden features an impressive collection of well-organized mini-gardens. From Asian gardens to a pizza garden, there’s something for everyone in this learning facility and education center.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority is proud to name the Community Garden award after the late Linn Mills. Mills, was a respected local horticulturist who worked with Cooperative Extension, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the Springs Preserve and the Las Vegas Valley Water District. Known as Doctor Green Thumb, Mills was devoted to the community and to the art of vegetable gardening.
The Doolittle Senior Center Community Garden Project located at 1200 Blankenship was formally dedicated on May 17, 1995. The garden is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary.
