Events start May 1 for Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month
University of Nevada Cooperative Extension urges Nevadans to prepare their homes for wildfire
"Prepare Your Home For Wildfire" is the message for Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month, beginning May 1. Events are scheduled across the state to encourage a shift in the way Nevadans perceive the wildfire threat to their communities.
"With this message we hope to change our traditional thinking about the wildfire threat from being reactionary and protecting our homes once a wildfire starts, to being proactive and preparing our homes to survive a wildfire before one begins," said Ed Smith, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension natural resource specialist and director of the Living With Fire educational program. "By preparing our homes ahead of time, we can greatly improve the chances that they will survive a wildfire."
Nevadans are invited to find an event in their area at http://www.livingwithfire.info/calendar to learn about the steps they can take to prepare their homes for wildfire. Events and conferences are scheduled in various communities throughout the state and are organized by community members; local, state and federal firefighting agencies; University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and others.
Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month is a collaborative effort of local, state and federal firefighting agencies; University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and many others.
