Free Gardening Classes at Acacia Park in Henderson

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Southern Area Master Gardeners—for the 9th year—will offer a series of free classes at Acacia Park in the fall. Classes are offered in partnership with the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, and are published in “Henderson Happenings.” All classes will be taught by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener instructors and begin at 9 a.m. The fall line-up includes:

September 21, 2013, Fall Veggies for a Winter Garden: This is the nuts and bolts of successful vegetable gardening. A Master Gardener will discuss what will grow in the Las Vegas Valley, when to plant, when to fertilize and varieties that seem to do well.

October 5, 2013, Everything is Coming Up Roses: Roses are arguably the oldest garden plants in the world. Cultivated in China and parts of Europe for centuries, these extraordinary plants hold a special place in the landscape. There are countless varieties in a bewildering array of styles and forms. Let a certified Master Gardener and a Las Vegas Rosarian give you the hints to make Roses a part of your landscape.

October 26, 2013, Trick or Treats: Master Gardeners have a few tricks up their sleeves as they introduce kids to festive plant projects as Halloween approaches. All children, young and young at heart, are invited to attend. Early registration is recommended as space fills quickly.

November 9, 2013, Gardening with Physical Limitations: Gardening is a healthy habit for all ages, but sometimes a physical condition can affect our ability to enjoy gardening. Learn strategies for modifying clothing, equipment, and techniques to prevent injury to you and your garden. Bring your favorite gardening implement.

November 23, 2013, Growing and Using Herbs: Herbs are easy to grow and have many uses. They can be grown indoors and as landscape plants in your yard, they can be harvested and a great addition to soups and salads, used for decorations in your home, and as gifts for the holidays. Come and join a Master Gardener and learn all about herbs.
