Free Gardening Classes at Acacia Park in March

Clark County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners—for the 8th year--will offer a series of free classes at Acacia Park in March. Classes are offered in partnership with the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, and are published in “Henderson Happenings.” All classes will be taught by Master Gardener instructors and begin at 9 a.m. The March line-up includes:

March 2, Acacia Demonstration Garden Tours - Join the Southern Nevada Master Gardeners for a tour of the demonstration garden. Have all your gardening questions answered by the experts and wander the park and explore what a garden in the desert can become.

March 9, Landscape Design with Native Plants in Mind - The most successful and water wise landscapes incorporates native and adaptable plants. Get to know the best of them and how to use then in your yard. Some landscape design and basic layout designs will be discussed. A certified Southern Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener will also explore the demonstration garden for examples. Come with your questions and be ready for some very creative ideas.

Mach 16, Let it ROT! — Composting 101 - Composting is possible in a desert environment. Learn the basics of composting from certified Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners for your backyard and manage your compost pile safely and efficiently. Putting worms to work can be a family project and good for your garden as well.

March 23, Companion Planting - Just as with people, compatibility can be important to plants. There are many benefits in planning a landscape using companion planting; an art that can decrease pesky garden pests, add variety and diversity, and help bring a balanced eco-system to your landscape. Learn how to use companion plants from an expert Southern Nevada Master Gardener.

March 30, Gardening for patios and small yards and Container Gardening - Optimize your growing potential and beautify those small porches, patios, and decks through the creative use of containers. Nevada Cooperative Extension certified Master Gardeners will bring some exciting new ideas for you to explore.

Pre-registration is requested by going to the City of Henderson then and clicking Online Registration.

The Master Gardeners will have an “Ask a Master Gardener” table at the Park on class days. Acacia Park is located at 50 Casa Del Fuego (Intersection of 215 and 515) in Henderson. Master Gardener volunteers are also available to answer questions through the Home Gardening Help Line, 257-5587. The Help Line is staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
