Workshop on processing and selling local meat planned
Beginning and experienced agricultural producers invited to second Herds and Harvest program.
University of Nevada Cooperative Extension invites Nevada farmers and ranchers to “Processing and Selling Locally Grown Meat” on April 30 and May 1 at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Lifelong Learning Center in Las Vegas.
The two-day workshop is designed to help Nevada agricultural producers learn about U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations for processing and selling locally grown meat, selling meat to Whole Foods Market and high-end restaurants in Las Vegas, and insurance liabilities in selling locally grown meat. In addition, Oregon Natural Meats will discuss their experiences in getting started with their operation. The program will be available live via interactive video to UNCE offices in Elko, Churchill and Lyon counties.
The workshop is part of Coopertive Extension’s Herds and Harvest program, a three-year agricultural initiative providing Nevada’s beginning farmers and ranchers with the tools necessary to own, operate and sustain their own agricultural operation.
Individuals with no agricultural experience, those involved in agriculture for less than 10 years and those expanding their operations qualify for this and all other Herds and Harvest programming.
Preregistration for the two-day event is $50 per ranch (for up to three people) and includes lunch and refreshments both days. Registration on the day of the event is $60.
