Carson City and Douglas County residents interested in taking the Master Gardener course, which runs March 5 — May 1, must attend an orientation sessions. Those are scheduled for:

  • Douglas County: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 22 at the Extension office at 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville

The Master Gardener classes will be taught live at the Reno Cooperative Extension office at 4955 Energy Way and video conferenced to the Carson City and Douglas County offices. The Reno class is full.

Master Gardener coordinator Wendy Hanson Mazet said the orientation is a good way for candidates to find out if the Master Gardener training is what they are looking for.

The classes will cover botany, plant care, soil management, plant identification, pruning, insects, plant diseases, turf management, fruit trees, vegetables, water-efficient landscaping, container gardening, weeds and plant problem diagnosis. The program will be taught by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension employees, Nevada Department of Agriculture specialists and highly skilled local professionals.

This program is designed to train you to become a University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteer. Master Gardeners are leaders in environmental stewardship through education. Once you complete your training, pass a take-home, open-book exam and volunteer 50 hours of community service, you will be a certified Master Gardener. You will be given additional community service opportunities each year. In order to maintain certification, Master Gardeners volunteer a minimum of 30 hours each year.

If you are interested in becoming a Master Gardener in Carson City or Douglas County, call Mazet at 775-336-0246. The fee for the training and all necessary materials is $185.
