Earth Day Event
Earth Day was Celebrated on Saturday, April 18th at Veterans Park In September 1969, at a conference in Seattle, Washington, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that in the spring of 1970, there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on the environment. Earth Day founder, Nelson first proposed the nationwide environmental protest to thrust the environment onto the national agenda. Each year, Earth Day - April 22 - marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Although, the annual Earth Day is celebrated nationally on April 22nd, for practical purposes Hawthorne will celebrate it on Saturday, April 18th. The University of Nevada - Cooperative Extension, Mineral County hosted an Earth Day Fair on April 18, at Veterans Park. The Earth Day Fair featured the solar car from the High School, a plant exchange, our local youth prevention team selling baked goodies and free hot dogs sponsored by SOC, LLC Hawthorne Corporation. There were many venders such as At Liberty Bookstore, Home Interiors and Mary Kay. It was a beautiful day and enjoyed by all.
