BMP workshops planned this month for Tahoe Basin

Sessions teach contractors how to install erosion-control measures at Lake Tahoe

By Jim Sloan

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and its BMP retrofit partners will hold two workshops in April for landscapers, property owners and contractors who want to learn how to install Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Tahoe Basin.

BMPs are land management techniques that control erosion and prevent water pollution from reaching Lake Tahoe.

All developed properties in the Tahoe Basin are required to have BMPs. Licensed contractors who successfully complete the session can get their businesses listed in the 2009 BMP Installation Service Providers List.

The tenth annual Basic Contractors BMP Workshop is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. April 17 at Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe. Registration is $30 if postmarked by April 1 and $45 after. The fee includes instruction from local experts, a Home Landscaping Guide and lunch. A copy of the 2007-08 workshop manual, "How to Install BMPs in the Lake Tahoe Basin," can be reserved for an additional $15.

A free half-day Refresher Workshop is available to professionals who have been through either of these trainings in the last two years. That program will be from 8-11:30 a.m. April 24 at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency at 128 Market St., Stateline, NV.

Registration forms are due by April 10 for the Refresher Workshop. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Staff from the TRPA and other partner agencies will participate in a Refresher Workshop panel to answer questions about difficult BMP installations, permits and related matters.

For registration information, contact University of Nevada Cooperative Extension at (775) 832-4150 or go to www.trpa.org.

The workshops are put on by Cooperative Extension, Nevada Tahoe Conservation District, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Tahoe Resource Conservation District.

The workshops will review BMPs for single-family residences as well as new inspection procedures for obtaining a BMP certificate of completion and new defensible space guidelines.
