Cooperative Extension’s Leslie Allen to be on KUNR
RENO — University of Nevada Cooperative Extension commercial horticulture coordinator Leslie Allen will be a guest on KUNR’s Nevada Newsline Dec. 19.
Allen said she will be talking with host Dan Erwine about what it is like to eat locally in Nevada and why it is important for families to bring farm fresh, local grown food to the family table.
Shelley Brant of the Local Food Network will also be a guest on the show.
The show will air from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Dec. 19 on KUNR. The call-in number to ask the guests questions is 784-1867 locally and toll-free 1-866-723-KUNR from anywhere. The program will also be streamed live on KUNR.org and the audio of the program will be archived at KUNR.org for 3-4 weeks.
Allen is participating in an eating study known as "Locavore Nation" where participants attempt to eat 80 percent of their food from local, organic and sustainable sources. "Locavore Nation" is sponsored by America Public Media’s radio show, "The Splendid Table," which is broadcast locally on KUNR.
Allen also worked with dozens of permaculture enthusiasts and student volunteers from the University this summer to plant a vegetable garden on a median near Reno’s West Street Market.
Last month Allen was awarded a Golden Pinecone award, presented each year to individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to sustaining and improving the natural environment of the Truckee Meadows. The Pine Cone Ball awards, sponsored by Nevada EcoNet, are considered the most prestigious environmental awards in northern Nevada.
KUNR can be heard at 88.7 on the FM dial in Reno and at 91.7 in Verdi.
