Posted 6/10/2008

If gardening is your passion, why not become a Master Gardener volunteer? Apply for the Master Gardener training program, offered by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Sept. 9 — Nov. 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 — 9 p.m. The classes will be held at the Cooperative Extension office in Carson City, 2621 Northgate Lane. They will also be videoconferenced to the Cooperative Extension office in Gardnerville, 1329 Waterloo Lane. Interested individuals must attend one of two orientation meetings: 6 p.m. on June 23 at the Cooperative Extension office in Carson City, or 6 p.m. on June 25 at the Cooperative Extension Office in Gardnerville.

Specialists from University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Nevada Department of Agriculture, and the local horticulture trade will present a wide variety of topics, including botany, plant identification, plant care, pruning, entomology, plant pathology, turf management, fruit trees, vegetables, weeds, plant problem diagnosis, landscaping and more. The registration fee is $165, which includes all classes, class materials, a Master Gardener t-shirt and badge, an appreciation banquet, and refreshments.

After completing the training program, an open-book test, and 50 hours of volunteering for Master Gardener activities, participants become certified Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners are leaders in environmental stewardship, and each Master Gardener commits at least 50 hours each year to community gardening, horticulture and educational activities. Master Gardeners in northern Nevada dedicate thousands of hours of time to community projects each year.

To reserve a seat at one of the orientations, RSVP to Wendy Hanson, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 775-887-2252, 775-782-9960 or hansonw@unce.unr.edu. Due to space constraints, interviews will be conducted prior to acceptance into the training program.
