University alum returns to his Eureka County roots
McCuin named extension educator after serving for Nevada Department of Agriculture
Experience is certainly paying off for Gary McCuin.
After working as a rangeland specialist and agricultural inspector for the Nevada Department of Agriculture, McCuin joined University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) as the Eureka County Extension Educator on Jan. 1.
"Eureka is one of my favorite communities," McCuin said. "I appreciate the lifestyle afforded in rural communities such as Eureka and the value placed on community in rural areas."
McCuin is no stranger to Central Nevada and UNCE.
When he served at NDA for five years, McCuin worked with UNCE as co-founder and teaching member for its Nevada Range Management School and as a teacher with UNCE’s Nevada Riparian Cadre. He also co-authored UNCE’s Nevada Rangeland Monitoring Handbook.
"I quickly discovered that facilitation, collaboration and cooperation at the local level is key to success where multiple and varied concerns are involved," McCuin said about his experience with NDA.
McCuin said his NDA experience will help him with educational programming for Eureka County owners and managers of the land.
"Education and outreach plays a critical role in extending the influence and value of research beyond academia to where it is needed and applied," McCuin said.
A native of Central Nevada, McCuin earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s in agricultural economics from the University of Nevada, Reno. McCuin grew up and worked on the Fish Creek Ranch, and his family owned ranches in Railroad Valley, Nevada and Gooding, Idaho.
"I have had the privilege of working on and managing several ranches with production of livestock, hay and grains," McCuin said.
After obtaining his master’s degree, McCuin worked for Sanders Associates in Reno for 11 years and also served as the executive secretary to the Nevada State Grazing Boards for 12 years. McCuin served as the president of Mack Land, Inc., specializing in agricultural, commercial properties and transitional land, from 1998 to 2002 until joining NDA.
