Holiday Food and Health Tip #5: Gifts to Get Kids Moving

Consider holiday gift giving a golden opportunity to promote your children's health through play and physical activity. Children and teens should be physically active at least 30 to 60 minutes each day. In addition, time spent being sedentary, such as watching television, playing video games, or on the computer, should be limited to less than two hours each day.

You can foster your children's interest in physical activity by choosing gifts to help them become more active. Here are some gift ideas to get your children moving this holiday season and in the New Year.

  • Any outdoor toy or sports equipment, including bicycles, in-line skates, snowboards, basketballs, footballs, etc.
  • Dance, sport or other fitness lessons.
  • Outdoor or sports clothing and safety gear, such as winter coats, hats, gloves, yoga-wear, bike helmets, pads for in-line skating, etc.
  • Nintendo Wii video game system.
  • Gift certificates for a climbing gym, batting cage, roller rink, ice rink, ski resort, etc.

Don't forget to make time to play with your children and their gifts. This can encourage them and help ensure their comfort, skill development, and safety.
