November 17, 2011—Pest Control—Bob Morris, Cooperative Extension Emeritus Faculty and columnist for the Las Vegas Review Journal/Sun, will describe common garden pests in gardens and orchards; organic and inorganic control; soil problems and mulching.

4-H LogoChildren from ages of 8-18 are invited to join University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Gardening Basics workshops for hands-on learning and activities on November 10, 15, 17, 22, 29 and December 1.  The workshops will be held at the Cooperative Extension office (1897 Moapa Valley Blvd., Logandale) from 4-5:30 p.m.

The cost is $10 per person and workshop topics are: composting, worm farming, seed sprouting, transplanting, and how to grow and use herbs. Included each day will be a demonstration on how to incorporate garden produce for quick and nutritious snacks.

All Nevada children age 9 14 are eligible to enter the Radon Awareness poster contest. They can be enrolled in a public, private, territorial, tribal, DoD or home school; or through a sponsoring club, such as an art, computer, reading or science club; scouting organization; or 4-H club. club. The new deadline is November 7, 2011.

Schools from all 50 states, U.S. territories, tribal nations and the Department of Defense (DoD) are encouraged to participate in the contest. Judges will select winners and runners-up in each state,
territory, tribal nation, and DoD schools category.

With budgets being cut and money tighter, Picture of Hand with PencilCooperative Extension offers the Nuts and Bolts of Grant Writing. The one-day class session is held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center.The upcoming class date is November 16.

During the day, non-profit and government organization participants will learn how to: develop a community needs assessment, set goals, write outcome objectives, create a working budget, develop a budget and a budget narrative and much more. The class instructor is Pamela Kahn-Van Pelt, emeritus resource specialist for Cooperative Extension.
