Many studies rank Nevada low on volunteer activity, but Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Southern Nevada prove them wrong! The past year was an especially busy time for the Las Vegas Master Gardeners who offer free information and gardening advice to the community through workshops, community projects, information booths and the Home Gardening Help Line (702-257-5555).
In 2010, Master Gardener volunteers staffing the Help Line answered 3,863 phone calls and 381 letters and emails. This is a 7 percent increase in gardening queries from the previous year. The 303 Certified Master Gardeners in Las Vegas contributed 38,104 volunteer hours—valued at $794,468. This is an average of over 125 volunteer hours per Master Gardener compared to a statewide average of 29.6 hours per resident1.
Master Gardeners support community projects across the Valley. Project locations include Community Gardens at Doolittle, Leiburn and Archie Grant Senior Centers, Acacia Park, Nellis AFB, Springs Preserve, UNCE Orchard and Nathan Adelson Hospice.
