October 1 begins the new 4-H year. Let’s promote 4-H in Elko County! To keep our program going strong we always need to be recruiting new members. Do you know anyone who might be interested in joining 4-H? Now is the time to contact them and invite them to your next 4-H meeting. Be sure to urge new members’ parents to attend the meeting, too. 4-H is for families! Let’s make a concentrated effort to involve more Elko County youth in 4-H.

Junior and Intermediate record books are due to the Extension Office on Friday, October 12, by 4:30 p.m. Sample record books are available at the Extension Office for members to view and to use as examples of how to put their record books together. Copies of pages can be made to use for reference. Utilize these resources if you are in doubt about how to fill out your project sheets or put your book together properly.
General Leaders, please submit a preliminary list of your club’s record books and what projects they contain. This gives a better idea of how many judges will be needed and how long the judging will take. 4-H members give your record books to your General Leader before October 12!

Marva Smith set October 25 for the day to finish judging the Junior and Intermediate Record Books. The office will be open from 8 a.m. until after the General Leaders’ Meeting. The General Leaders’ Meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Come help finish judging and stay for the meeting. If you have agenda items you would like discussed, please email them to Jill at tingeyj@unce.unr.edu.

Elko County has a large contingency going to the State Shooting Sports Field Day in Las Vegas. Several parents would like to caravan to Las Vegas. If you would like to caravan, please call the 4-H Office at 738-7291 and we will start a list. It’s a long drive and if you are the only parent going, sometimes it’s more comfortable knowing someone you knew was close. Remember we are cheering for our Elko County youth participating!

ALL 4-H members who sold a market animal at the 2018 4-H Auction must complete a 4-H Market Project Record and turn it in to the Extension Office. Checks for market animals will be sent after October 16 and only after you have submitted your completed record. Please remember there is a difference between the Market Project Record and the Production (Breeding) Project Sheet. Your General Leader or active project leader (who is on file at the 4-H Office) must sign your Market Project Record before you turn it in. Checks will come from Karen Winchell, secretary/treasurer for the 4-H Livestock Sale Committee.

October 1, 6 p.m., GBC Health Science Building room 107, is the finale, the Carcass Workshop. Don Noorda, Wells FFA advisor will be educating you on what it takes to achieve an award winning carcass and presenting the top carcasses with monetary awards from McIntyre Ranch, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Wachtel, Ellison Ranching and Sheepy Hollow Ranch. You won’t want to miss out.
